Commonwealth's Attorney
The Commonwealth's Attorney is a Constitutional officer elected for a four-year term. The Commonwealth's Attorney is responsible for representing the citizens of Smyth County to present evidence in court against persons charged with committing crimes. Cases presented by the Commonwealth's Attorney are tried in the Circuit, General District, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts. Smyth County Commonwealth's Attorney is Phillip L. "Bucky" Blevins, who directs four assistant commonwealth's attorneys.
The Commonwealth's Attorney's Office oversees the Victim/Witness Unit, which counsels crime victims regarding their legal rights and offers advice about rehabilitative services and other community resources available for victims' protection.
The Commonwealth's Attorney also acts as a legal advisor on criminal issues for local and state law enforcement agencies, such as the Smyth County Sheriff's Office, Marion, Chilhowie and Saltville Town Police, Animal Control, State Police, and Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries.
